Care instructions for shoes
New shoes typically lack the necessary protection against dirt and moisture. To extend their lifespan, it is advisable to apply a protective treatment before their first use and to reapply it regularly.
Tailor Your Care to the Type of Shoe
Different materials require different levels of care. Delicate materials like suede and nubuck need extra attention. Always use the recommended shoe care products, as they are specifically designed to protect and preserve the material of your shoes.
Cleaning
The first step in caring for shoes is always cleaning.
Leather: Use a shoe brush to remove dirt and a leather cleaner for tougher stains.
Suede & Nubuck: Use specialized products such as a suede brush, sanding block, and cleaning shampoo. Pay extra attention to tough stains, salt marks, and shiny areas by gently sanding them.
Oiled Leather: Brush off dirt and use cleaning shampoo as needed.
Textile: Brush off dirt and use cleaning shampoo when necessary.
Care
Once the shoes are cleaned, they should be treated with products that refresh and nourish them.
Leather: Apply shoe cream using a brush. Creams in tins or tubes contain color pigments that restore shine while also nourishing the leather and restoring its color. Allow the shoe cream to dry for 15 minutes before brushing it off and polish with a cloth.
Suede & Nubuck: Use a special cream that restores and impregnates the material. After application, gently roughen the surface with a suede brush.
Oiled Leather: Use a fat paste or spray to give the leather a freshly oiled appearance while protecting and provides water resistance to the surface. Keep in mind that lighter-colored shoes may darken.
Protection
The final step protects your shoes against dirt and moisture.
Leather: While shoe cream offers some protection, for the best results, use a water resistant paste or spray. The spray provides an invisible, highly water-repellent surface. Leather-soled shoes do not withstand moisture well, so use special water resistant products to protect the leather sole.
Suede & Nubuck: Apply an water resistance spray, allow it to dry, then brush the surface with a suede brush. Repeat for optimal protection.
Oiled Leather: Use water resistance products that re-oil the leather, giving it a refreshed appearance while also protecting it.
Textile: Apply a thin layer of spray, let it dry, and repeat for additional protection.
Gore-Tex Materials: Care should be based on the outer surface material, followed by a final spray with water resistance products.
Lacquered Leather, Synthetic, and Rubber: Do not use sprays or creams on these materials.
